Capsule Reviews: Crime (5/13/12)

Escapist
Wanna know why Peter Jackson chose Andy Serkis as Gollum? Look no further.

Minor, but good programmer about a gang of thugs who break into a man's house and kill his pregnant wife. They are led by Serkis as a very deadly very crazy psycho. Even though the baby survives the man can not let the idea of revenge go and he stages his death, then gets himself arrested. The idea is he will move from prison to prison and kill the men who killed his wife. Serkis isn't in a majority of the film but his presence hangs over the film like a cloud. When the final confrontation goes down, it goes in ways that neither expects.

A good but unremarkable thriller worth seeing because its a good time passer. Also it gives you an idea of why Jackson chose Serkis as Gollum and Kong.

Suspect Zero
From the director of Shadow of the Vampire and Begotten comes the tale of the hunt for a serial killer...who's hunting serial killers. Ben Kingsley is Oscar worthy as a creepy ex-FBI agent seemingly gone rogue. This film is a good little thriller that operates in its own world and leaves you feeling very un-easy for hours afterward. The whole affair seems off and odd and not completely there, but it leaves you feeling uneasy. Its not perfect but worth trying.

Dog Eat Dog
IMBD lists the US gross for this film as $80 from one screen. It's not that bad
Columbian gangsters botch a shakedown job at the same time a witch woman sets in motion a specll to get revenge on whom ever killed a Don's god son. Gritty crime drama works because it's a great fusion of things we've seen before mixed with new takes on things. I like that the violence carries weight and you wince when people are hit or shot.
